Shavasana - Experiential Vignette 5 - Arrival.JPG

shavasana

An unbuilt design proposal done in 2011 for a yoga studio at the intersection of H St. and 4th St. NE in Washington, D.C. Following the tradition of phenomenological architecture and hypothetical design such Newton’s Tomb proposed by Etienne-Louis Boullee, this project sought to understand the practice of yoga through the creation of a sacred space based around the Shavasana or “death pose”. This was accomplished by creating an eighty foot excavation deep into the ground in order to allow one to reflect by dwelling within the heart of the earth.
